Nevertheless, HOPE Persists
Archival prints, stickers, and merch with this image are now available. RESIST with beauty.
A reminder that ART IS POLITICAL.
As a bisexual, middle-aged American woman with invisible disabilities, I began this piece 24 days into the new fascist dictatorship in the US.
With roughly 8 hours of careful tracing of the reference photo provided by Alan Marsh, and north of 75 hours of work to complete it, I've found that focusing on this piece has been a cathartic meditation on HOPE in the midst of darkness and bloodshed as the federal administration has swiftly dismantled the US government, Constitution, civil liberties, and the agencies which protect and provide for us, the nation's citizens.
My most ambitious piece to date, with 2 years of self-taught experience, I used bright colors to contrast with the blackness representing evil intent and deeds. Bloody shades of red represent the callous actions taken to harm the most vulnerable in our midst.
I painted a pastel rainbow spectrum on the window itself to represent *both* the PRIDE of the queer community and the HOPE that God promised. I further used gradients of white, cream, orange, and red on the filigree highlights to represent additional spectra of diversity, and the beauty they add to the greater picture.
For indeed, the *binary*, MONOCHROME world our new government prefers is far less interesting or beautiful.
Die-cut donut animal stickers now available
While the original paintings that inspired these stickers are displayed in Hermiston Donut Shop in Hermiston, OR - their likenesses are now available as die-cut stickers!
Each sticker measures roughly 3” on its long side, except the tiger cats, which measures about 3.25” wide.
Notice that in most cases the donuts cast a shadow or stick out from the rest of the image. This is because the donuts were all painted separately, then added to the paintings on top of bumpers to raise them up from the surfaces of the paintings, making them effectively 3D elements on the paintings. We’ve done what we can to preserve that aspect of these paintings in sticker form!

Meet the Artist
Erin R Hundtofte first tried watercolor painting on January 30, 2023, and was hooked.
With thousands of hours of experimentation with materials and techniques since then, Erin has developed a bold, colorful style more commonly found in acrylic paintings, by using highly-pigmented watercolors and gouache in high concentrations in order to retain their vivid brightness.
While Erin has found that she tends to connect most deeply with animal subjects, as of 2025 she is currently working to expand her repertoire to better incorporate florals, landscapes, and architectural themes based on the style she is cultivating. She has yet to try her hand much at painting people, but this is likely to change before too long…
Erin’s first in-person art display can be found in the Hermiston Donut Shop, in Hermiston, Oregon (USA), where a bright series of animals eating or drooling over donuts can be found mounted on panels on the wall. Each donut painting includes 3D elements, and all are treated with UV varnish and cold wax finish for waterproofing. Archival prints, cards, and vinyl stickers of the Donut Series will be made available soon, and the original pieces are also available for sale - submit any inquiries below.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Erin often works to find ways to incorporate rainbow themes into her works in a non-overt manner, subtly seeking to normalize the use of rainbows in various forms of art.
Always one to push the boundaries of what a medium can do, Erin envisions future art series incorporating modeling clay for even more dramatic 3D elements on otherwise flat watercolor paper mounted on cradled wood panels. Yes, you can paint with watercolor on certain types of modeling clay!
In a past life, Erin used enameled copper wire and fine silver wire to wrap baskets, crochet jewelry and scarves, and make other pieces under the business name “Xanadu 2 You”. Erin has since given up working with wire due to invisible disabilities that make such work too hard on her hands, which are hypermobile and arthritic. A limited number of legacy wire pieces remain available - submit an inquiry for more details, if you’re interested in these.
Outside of her work as an artist, Erin is an avid gardener, sings with Northwest Repertory Singers in Tacoma, WA (USA) and volunteers as Vice President of their Board, and lives in Browns Point, Tacoma, with her husband and their two kitties, Annie and Parma.
